Bought, thrifted, won and lifted. Our collection of vintage ashtrays have been sourced from all over Europe to help satisfy our repurposing habit.
These examples are of a bygone era when mass-produced plastic wasn’t an option and every bar owner and restauranteur used whatever means they could in an effort to make something unique while promoting their business.
The genius of these adorable ceramics is that they were like catnip to punters. One of the earliest memories I have of my mother (a woman who has never smoked in her life) is her stuffing a large Marriot emblazoned bowl into her handbag when the waiter wasn't looking.
Generally, this is how all of these pieces got into the wild. The restaurateurs did not care at all, these ashtrays were the perfect free advertisement in a pre-social media age.
What's that I hear you say? you don’t smoke? Of course, you don’t, who does anymore?
These vessels can be used for so much more than dabbing your old fag-ends out. From keeping your keys and loose change by the door to holding your AirPods on your bedside cabinet at night there's plenty of life in these yet.
And they just look great! the colour pallets of the time are stunning. Each piece is unique and to be used. Please do remember, there may be a few knicks and chips here and there, expected from any one of us who has practically lived in bars since the 70s and lived to tell the tale.
